How to Choose a Beginner Surfboard

Your first surfboard makes or breaks how fast you learn. Get it right and you catch waves and stand up early. Get it wrong and you fight the ocean. Here is the simple version, from a shop that has been putting people on their first boards since 2001.

Start with a soft top

For almost every beginner, the right first board is a soft top, also called a foam board. They float well, catch waves easily, and are safe and forgiving when you fall. A soft top gets you riding waves in your first sessions, which is the whole point.

Size it to your body and skill

Longer and wider means more stability, more float, and more waves caught. Use this as a starting point:

  • Under 120 lbs, kids and lighter riders: a 7'0 soft top has plenty of float without being a handful.
  • 120 to 170 lbs, most adult beginners: an 8'0 soft top is the sweet spot, stable and easy to paddle.
  • 170 to 220 lbs, larger adults: a 9'0 soft top gives you the extra float to catch waves with ease.
  • Ready for a real longboard feel: a 9'6 log once you have had a session or two and want to glide and noseride.

These are the exact sizes we stock in our rental fleet, so you can try one before you commit.

Rent before you buy

Renting first is the smart move. It lets you feel different sizes and shapes without spending on a board you might outgrow in a month. Once you know what works for your body and your surfing, you will buy with confidence. We rent soft tops and longboards from $45 a day, fins, leash, and wax included.

When you are ready to buy

When it is time, the shop carries new and used surfboards for every level, including our own Thalia Surf Craft shapes. Come in and we will help you match a board to your size, your spots, and where you want to take your surfing.

Don't forget the wetsuit

Southern California water needs a wetsuit most of the year. See our wetsuit thickness guide so your sessions stay warm.

Frequently asked questions

What size surfboard should a beginner get?

Most adult beginners do best on an 8 or 9 foot soft top. Lighter riders and kids can go shorter, around 7 foot. More length means more stability and more waves caught.

Should a beginner get a soft top or a hard board?

A soft top. Foam boards are more stable, float better, and are safer on a wipeout, which makes them the fastest way to learn.

Is it better to rent or buy as a beginner?

Rent first. Trying different sizes before you buy means you end up with a board that actually fits you.
