How to choose a new surfboard

The right board comes down to three things: your skill level, the waves you surf most, and the volume you need to float and paddle well. Beginners and small wave days reward more volume and length, so think a mid length or longboard. Steeper, hollower waves and advanced surfing call for a lower volume shortboard. Our staff surfs these boards at Brooks, Thalia, and Rockpile, so the recommendations here come from the water, not a spec sheet.

Fishes and twin fins keep speed through soft California sections, performance shortboards suit punchier surf, and mid lengths are the do everything board most people actually surf the most. Almost every board here takes a removable fin setup, so you can tune drive and release for the day.

Set yourself up

A new board deserves the basics: a leash sized to the board, traction or wax for grip, and a board bag to protect it in the car and on trips. Surfing cool water? Add a wetsuit so you can stay out longer.

Frequently asked questions

What size surfboard should a beginner get?

Most beginners learn fastest on a board with plenty of volume and length, such as a soft top, longboard, or higher volume mid length in the 7 to 9 foot range. The extra float makes paddling and catching waves far easier, which means more time standing up and less time fighting the board.

What's the difference between a fish and a shortboard?

A fish is wider, flatter, and usually shorter with a swallow tail and twin or quad fins, and it generates speed in small, soft surf. A performance shortboard is narrower with more rocker, built for steep, powerful waves and tighter turns. In typical California conditions, a fish or mid length gets ridden more often.

Do these surfboards come with fins?

It varies by model. Some include fins, and many ship as the board only so you can choose your own setup. Check the product page, and browse our surfboard fins collection to match a system (FCS, Futures) and template to your board.

Can I order a board that is not in stock?

Often yes. Call or email the shop and we will check availability with the shaper or distributor and walk you through dimensions before you order.
