What a traction pad does

A traction pad sticks to the tail of your board and grips your back foot, the one that drives turns. It replaces tail wax with consistent, all day grip and gives you a raised kick tail to brace against in critical turns and an arch bar to locate your foot without looking down. Most shortboarders run a pad on the tail and wax the deck under the front foot.

Choosing a pad

Pads come as one, two, or three pieces. More pieces fit varied tail shapes and let you set your own spacing. Consider arch height (more arch means more feedback) and kick height (a taller kick gives more to push against). Match it to the board you ride, whether that is a new shortboard or your everyday step up.

Applying it cleanly

Work on a clean, dry, wax free tail in a warm spot so the adhesive bonds. Dry fit the placement first, then peel and press firmly and leave it to set before surfing. Finish your setup with fins and a leash.

Do I still need wax if I have a traction pad?
Usually yes. A tail pad grips your back foot, but most surfers still wax the deck under the front foot and chest area. Longboarders and many mid length riders skip the pad entirely and wax the whole deck.
How do I apply a traction pad so it stays on?
Make sure the tail is clean, dry, and completely free of wax, and work somewhere warm. Dry fit the placement first, then peel the backing, press firmly across the whole pad, and let it set for a day before surfing so the adhesive fully bonds.
What's the difference between a 1, 2, or 3 piece pad?
More pieces let you adjust spacing to your stance and fit different tail shapes, and they are easier to place on curvy tails. One piece pads are quicker to apply and sit flush if they match your tail's outline.
