Salt Creek Surf Guide

Ten minutes south of the shop sits the best all around beach break in south Orange County. Salt Creek is where Laguna surfers go when they want more push than our coves can offer, and it rewards the trip almost year round. Here is how to make the most of a session at the Creek.

Salt Creek: the wave

Creek is really three waves sharing one stretch of sand below the bluff. The Point sits at the north end, a longer left that gives you the most open face and the most forgiving takeoff of the three. Middles is the heart of the beach, shifting A frame peaks that split left and right and handle the most people. Gravels holds down the south end, a faster, harder breaking wave that is the pick when you want something quick and punchy. The bottom is sand mixed with rock, and the reef outside is what organizes all those peaks.

This is a real beach break with real power. On a good day it runs from chest high to a couple feet overhead, and it breaks fast enough that soft, mushy wave habits get exposed quickly. Rips and undertow show up when the swell has some size, so know your limits and watch the water for a few minutes before you paddle out.

When to go and what to ride

Creek eats up almost every swell direction: south and southwest in summer, west and west northwest in winter, which is why it breaks so consistently. Mid to high tide on the push is the classic window. Get there early. The lot opens at 5am and the crowd builds fast once the morning light is on it, so dawn patrol is the honest answer for uncrowded waves.

Ride whatever suits the day. A standard shortboard handles most Creek conditions, a step up earns its keep on the overhead days, and on smaller summer mornings a fish or midlength from one of our local shapers keeps the fun factor high. Bring a wetsuit that matches the season, and wax up before the walk down.

Getting there and the walk down

Salt Creek Beach is off Ritz Carlton Drive in Dana Point, about ten miles south of the shop straight down PCH. Park in the pay lot, then follow the paved path down the hill through the bluff park. The walk down is easy and the walk back up is your cooldown. There are restrooms and outdoor showers by the beach, dogs are not allowed, and the tidepools at the edges are part of a protected marine conservation area, so look but leave them be.

Frequently asked questions

Is Salt Creek good for beginners?

Not really. The waves break fast and carry real power, and the crowd is competitive when it is good. Beginners are better served at Thalia Street or Doheny, then graduate to the Creek. If you are learning, our surf lessons at Thalia Street Beach are the right starting point.

What tide and swell are best at Salt Creek?

Mid to high tide on a rising push is the classic call, and the spot takes south, southwest, west, and west northwest swells, which is why it works in both summer and winter. Morning sessions before the wind and the crowd are best.

Where do you park for Salt Creek?

Use the pay lot off Ritz Carlton Drive in Dana Point. It opens at 5am and runs to midnight. From the lot, the paved path takes you down the bluff to the sand in about five minutes.

Stop by the shop on your way south. Wax, leashes, wetsuits, and boards from local shapers, plus daily rentals if your travel board did not make the trip.
