FCS or Futures, which do you need?

Fins are not universal. Your board has either an FCS or a Futures fin box, and your fins must match that system. FCS II fins click in tool free, while original FCS and Futures use a key and screw. Check your board's boxes before you buy, and if you are shopping a new surfboard, note which system it takes.

Setups: thruster, twin, quad, single

A thruster (three fins) is the all rounder, with control and predictability in most waves. A twin is loose and fast, perfect for fishes and small surf. A quad holds in steeper, hollower waves while keeping speed. A single fin brings classic glide and drawn out lines on longboards and mid lengths.

Sizing by weight

Most fin brands size by rider weight, so small, medium, and large templates map to weight ranges. Heavier surfers want larger fins for hold, and lighter surfers want smaller for easier release. Round out the kit with traction or wax and a leash.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my board uses FCS or Futures fins?

Look at the fin boxes on the bottom of your board. Futures uses a single long box per fin, while FCS uses two small plugs per fin (FCS or FCS II) for the side fins. The fin system is fixed to the board, so your fins have to match it, and they are not interchangeable without an adapter.
