Size your leash to your board

The rule of thumb: your leash should be as long as your board, or slightly longer. A 6 foot shortboard takes a 6 foot leash, and a 9 foot longboard takes a 9 to 10 foot calf or ankle leash. Too short and the board snaps back at you, and too long and it drags and tangles.

Thickness and conditions

Leash cord comes in different diameters. Thinner comp leashes reduce drag for small, clean waves, while thicker, stronger cords resist breaking in bigger, more powerful surf. Match the cord to the heaviest conditions you will surf on that board. Longboarders often choose calf or knee leashes to keep the cord out from underfoot when walking the board.

Care and pairing

Where does a longboard leash attach?
