Boardshorts, volley shorts, and hybrids

True boardshorts use quick dry, stretch fabric and a tie or grip waist built to surf in. Volley shorts are shorter with an elastic waist and mesh liner, so they are easy beach and pool wear. Hybrid or walk shorts look like everyday shorts but dry fast enough for a swim. Pick by where you will spend the day: lineup, sand, or street.

Fit and length

Length is measured by inseam. Shorter (around 16 to 18 inches) moves freely for surfing, and longer (19 to 21 inches) gives more coverage. A snug, secure waist keeps trunks on through duck dives. If you are surfing cold water, pair them under a wetsuit jacket. For warm days, finish the kit with sandals and a hat.
