San Onofre, known to everyone as San O, is often called the Waikiki of the California coastline. It is a mellow, longboard-friendly stretch of slow-rolling waves and easygoing aloha spirit, a short drive south of Laguna near San Clemente.
San O is really several breaks along one beach. The main sections, The Point, Old Man's, and Dogpatch, all serve up long, slow, forgiving waves that crest and roll rather than throw. Old Man's is the best known and works for all levels, while Dogpatch at the southern end is especially friendly for true beginners and soft tops. The mixed sand-and-rock bottom is forgiving, and the waves give you more time to react than almost anywhere in California.
South to southwest swells and mid to high tide are ideal, and early mornings beat the onshore wind. San O is a longboard wave at heart, so it shines on the small, clean days.
San Onofre is a California State Park. Parking is limited and fills early on summer weekends, so arrive in the morning. It is a classic, laid-back scene with friendly locals and a deep surf history, so soak it in.
This is longboard and soft-top country. A log lets you catch the slow rollers early and trim down the line the way San O was made for. Our 9'6 Felix longboard and Party soft top rentals are right at home here, fins, leash, and wax included. New to logging? Our beginner surfboard guide covers what to ride.
If it is your first time on a longboard, a lesson makes the learning curve much shorter. For more spots up the coast, see our Laguna Beach surf guide and the Doheny guide.
Yes, especially the Dogpatch and Old Man's sections. The waves are slow and forgiving, ideal for longboards and soft tops.
A longboard or soft top. San O is a classic logging wave that rewards length and glide.
Early. Parking is limited and fills on summer weekends, and the surf is cleanest before the wind comes up.
