An Interview with Thalia Surf collaborator Lauryn Alvarez

Thalia Surf is stoked to have teamed up with local Laguna Beach artist Lauryn Alvarez on a couple of killer new lady's tees. Lauryn grew up making art and she is able to strike a creative balance by dividing her time between painting and photography. Expressive suns, mushrooms, words and characters flow through her paintings, while film grain, muted tones and light leaks punctuate her photography. Lauryn was nice enough to answer a few of our questions and give us a glimpse into her creative universe.

How long have you been making art and taking photos?

I grew up always creating. Drawing, painting, messing around with clay, sewing little stuffed animals; all of it. I became interested in photography about 10 years ago or so. Then as time went on I became more serious about photography and switched from digital to analog. I always really enjoyed people as my subjects. But I wanted another outlet for creativity, so that when I’m alone I could still create. That’s when I began painting and really rediscovered my love for drawing and creating my own little worlds. I love the balance I have discovered with the two mediums. It keeps me inspired and I think really helps me to move forward.

What draws you to black and white film photography?

I think the fascination with black and white photography came from my overly particular color palette. I found myself always trying to hunt for the right color film to capture the mood I was feeling. I was given a roll of expired 3200 Kodak film, and that result changed everything for me. It was full of emotion, the grain told a story to me. It changed the outcome of the photo completely and made it feel like you were in another era. There’s nostalgia associated with black and white film. I can’t explain it really other than it’s just a feeling I have whenever I shoot.

What feeling or message do you want people to take with them after viewing your art?

Beauty is everywhere! Open your eyes and expand your mind to all that is around you. Seek more.

What and/or who inspires you?

Nature and the mysteries of the universe keep me goin!

Why suns and mushrooms?

I guess I’m subconsciously showing my appreciation of them. They are very enjoyable to draw and I love flowy shapes and lines, so they came natural to me. Nature has always been a source of inspiration to me. The sun is special to me, I’m thankful for the warmth it provides and the way it lifts me up. As for mushrooms, they are one of the most magnificent creatures. The seemingly endless amount of fungi species, to the benefits and purpose they hold, along with their beauty and intricate design; how can you not be inspired by their glory!

What have you been listening to lately?

Air and Aphex Twin have been very inspiring. Been enjoying having them on while working or just chillin.

What are you passionate about?

I am very passionate about balance. In my life, in my work, everything.
